Join Sentieri in a Sunday afternoon discussion group that will explore this remarkable novel suitable for intermediate and advanced Italian students.

Summer 2013's book is a compelling mix of social satire and murder mystery. A small culturally mixed community living in an apartment building in the center of Rome is thrown into disarray when one of the neighbors is murdered.

A Scholarship to Study in Italy

“Tauromenion - Città di Taormina”

3 Borse di Studio

 Al Concorso Letterario potranno partecipare tutti i cittadini stranieri amanti della lingua e cultura italiana che invieranno una storia breve in italiano ambientata a Taormina e/o in Sicilia, reali o di fantasia.

Regolamento

1. Possono partecipare al Concorso tutti i cittadini stranieri residenti all’estero che non siano di nazionalità né madrelingua italiana di qualsiasi età, sesso, cultura e religione.
    
2. Per partecipare al Concorso è necessario riempire un apposito modulo di iscrizione che si può scaricare sul sito.
    
3. I Partecipanti al Concorso Letterario dovranno far pervenire una “storia breve” in italiano da un minimo 2 a un massimo di 5 cartelle dattiloscritte (25 righe a cartella) entro il 30.06.2013, via email a director@babilonia.it
    
4. La “storia breve” dovrà essere ambientata a Taormina e/o in Sicilia,reali o immaginarie.
    
5. Le Storie Brevi potranno essere in forma di racconto, novella, storia romantica, giallo, avventure, fiction, ecc.
    
6. Le storie brevi saranno lette da un Comitato Scientifico formato dal Direttore della Scuola di Italiano per stranieri (Dr. Alessandro Adorno), dalla Direttrice del Festival Internazionale del Libro “Taobuk” (Dr.ssa Antonella Ferrara), dal Segretario Generale del festival Internazionale di Taormina “Taormina Arte” (Dr. Ninni Panzera), dall’Assessore alla Cultura della Città di Taormina (in carica dopo le prossime elezioni)
    
7. Il Comitato Scientifico non valuterà e/o premierà solo la correttezza morfologica, sintattica e lessicale delle storie ma la creatività e la fantasia della storia.
    
8. Agli scrittori delle 3 migliori Storie Brevi saranno assegnate 3 Borse di Studio per un soggiorno linguistico e culturale di 2 settimane ciascuna a Taormina presso la Scuola di Italiano per Stranieri BABILONIA
    
9. La Borsa di Studio comprende vitto (colazione e pranzo presso la caffetteria della scuola) e alloggio ma non comprende le spese di viaggio
    
10. I risultati della selezione e i nomi dei vincitori delle Borse di Studio saranno comunicati entro il 30.07.2013
     
11. Le Borse di Studio saranno assegnate nel corso di una cerimonia all’interno del Festival Internazionale del Libro TAOBUK che si terrà dal 21.09 al 27.09.2013

Idiom of the Week

This week’s idiom is “a mano a mano”.  This expression’s generic form is “poco a poco”, which means “little by little” in English.  Just as in Italian, English also has an idiomatic version of this expression: “step by step”. Both idioms express the progress of little actions leading towards larger achievements.

The English idiom uses footwork as its analogy, while the Italian version refers to work done with hands (the idiom literally means “hand by hand”).  On the land and in ones trade, success, in the Italian concept, is achieved by the hands.

To see this Italian value of un-rushed handiwork, one can look to the work of Paola Nervi, an Italian from Casale Monferrato who currently resides in France. She makes garments by hand, taking as long as necessary on each item she produces. She calls this  line of garments “Slow Hands”, just like the idiom “a mano a mano”.  For anyone interested in seeing this idiom come to life, “Slow Hands” has garments on display at Sentieri Italiani.

Idiom of the Week

This week’s idiom is “chiocciola”.  Literally this word translates as “snail” in English, but its idiomatic use has no counterpart in English!

When saying an email address to someone in italiano, you say “chiocciola” for where the at sign (@) goes in your address.  It’s quite logical really, “@” looks very much like a snail!

If you’re someone who uses email a lot, now you’re set to share your address in Italian.  If you want to share your email with Sentieri Italiani for news on Italian classes, events and other Italian opportunities in Chicago, feel free to contact info@sentieri.com, or “info chiocciola sentieri punto com”.

The “chiocciola” has gone on to become the symbol for Slow Food, a social and culinary movement that began in Italy.

Free Italian Programs with Italian Subtitles

For those of you who can't get enough of the Italian language, here's a resource where you can keep up with Italian news and entertainment.  The RAI network is Italy's primary broadcasting system, and it has a website where everyone can follow along.  If the spoken Italian is too difficult to follow along with, there is now the option to watch RAI online with Italian subtitles to help understand what you're hearing!  Check it out and enjoy!

Italian Cinema in Chicago

The 16th Annual European Film Festival continues through March 2013 at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago.

Sentieri Italiani has a pair of free tickets to the Italian film "Dormant Beauty" that will be playing at the Festival on March 22 and 24.  These tickets will be raffled off to all up-to-date individuals in the Sentieri membership program.  If you're not sure of your membership status, contact Enrico (enrico@sentieri.com) before Saturday March 16th, when the drawing will take place.  Members do not need to be present, an email will be sent to all members with the winner's name and the tickets can be picked up the week of March 18th.
